Jacqueline Knirnschild writes: “Edie’s observations are precise, poetic and contribute greatly to the novel’s verisimilitude, which is not surprising considering that Handler’s material comes from the seeds of her own observations of daily life in Perth.” Read full review

Longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s 2021 First Novel Prize
I am delighted to share that my novel Edie Richter is Not Alone is longlisted for The Center for Fiction’s 2021 First Novel Prize!! Edie would be shocked and nervous about so many people learning her awful secret. There are so many wonderful books on this list.

Wendy J. Fox gives a list of new Books From Small Presses That You Won’t Want To Put Down. Family secrets, popular culture, literary experimentation, and more to love in these new and forthcoming books.
Edie Richter is Not Alone
The title character in this novel is a freelancer who is adept at making dull fundraising letters engaging for potential donors. She and her husband relocate from the US to Western Australia; as Edie tries to negotiate life in a new country, she becomes more distant from her husband and enters a conflict with her neighbors. What no one knows is that Edie carries an explosive secret that has followed her to the other side of the world. Handler deftly builds tension with the lush landscape of Perth standing in contrast to Edie’s bleak outlook.

Living inside the head of Edie Richter was a wild and unexpected ride.
I was quickly hooked by the author’s marvelous writing style introducing us to Edie in the throes of crisis, while rapidly revealing her quirky, conflicted, hilarious view of the world. And her deep, deep grief. This character portrait is as real as it gets. If you’re in the market for reading a highly original work with a protagonist you just want to throw your arms around – spend some time with Edie.Reviewed at Northshire Books

Rebecca Handler grieved for her father by writing a novel — and swimming in the bay
When Rebecca Handler’s father died from Alzheimer’s in 2013, there were, “unsurprisingly given our family, moments of hilarity,” the San Francisco writer recalls. She was in the room with her mother and her brother, Daniel, waiting to witness their loved one’s last breath and the stillness that followed. But instead, what came were false starts, as each last breath became another last breath. And then another. Read more

In this resonant, surprisingly humorous novel, a woman moves to Australia following her father’s death and contends with grief and guilt in equal measures.
Edie Richter Is Not Alone is an absorbing, sharp, acerbic book about guilt and loss, easy to read in a single sitting but with a lasting impact. Read the full review

Review: ‘Edie’ puts an honest face on dealing with Alzheimer’s
“It may seem counterintuitive to pick up a novel about death and grief when so many people are suffering at this moment in history. (More sadness? No thanks!)
What Handler’s book teaches us is that facing tragedy head-on and accepting death as a constant are the only ways to get through it. Plus, reading about or sharing someone else’s pain teaches us empathy.”

“Edie’s increasingly unpredictable behavior reaches its crescendo with a heartbreaking climax, and along the way, the author explores not merely Edie’s guilt, but the complicated feelings over her loss. This quick, engrossing novel brings laughter and tears.” Read full review

STARRED REVIEW – Edie Richter is Not Alone
“A tragicomic exploration of the collateral damage of Alzheimer’s disease… Handler gets it right from the title on out. Edie is definitely not alone. Her plight is one many readers will respond to deeply and perhaps even be soothed by… Profound yet often quite funny, keenly observed, and deeply affecting.” Read full review
